How to record on Sky Stream? Well, “how to record” is not quite the correct question to ask!
When speaking for Sky Stream or Sky Glass, the word “recording” could be quite confusing for some people, so we’re here to clear the misconception.
Compared with the Sky Q, the Stream box is solely focused on broadband streaming, and you can’t record anything…
To “record” and save content for later viewing on your Sky Stream, highlight the program and press the “+” button on the remote to add the show to your playlist.
Let’s explain how the recording works on the Sky Stream puck!
Can You Record on Sky Stream?
When speaking for Sky Stream or Sky Glass, the word “recording” could be quite confusing for some people, so we’re here to clear the misconception.
In comparison with the Sky Q, which is a satellite receiver, the Sky Stream is solely focused on broadband streaming.
Hence, you can’t directly record and store the footage in the storage of the Sky Stream TV box since there is no storage available.
The Sky Stream is meant for online streaming, using an internet connection, and the “recording” works a bit differently from expected.
Sky Stream Recording Explained
The Sky Stream puck recording is more likely broadband streaming because you are actually not recording anything.
The way to watch already aired TV shows or movies is to add them to your “Playlist,” from where you’ll have access to all the released episodes, just like on-demand.
For example, when you add a series to the playlist, all of the episodes to this point will be there, available for streaming on-demand.
The only requirement is a strong internet connection on the Sky Stream puck so the streaming is smooth and bufferless.
To understand how the process works in-depth, follow the steps in the guide below!
How to Record on Sky Stream Puck in 5 Easy Steps?
Tip: Read through the guide consecutively!
1. Power ON Your Sky Stream Puck!
The first and essential step is to connect your Sky Stream puck to power and turn on the device for the operating system to load completely.
You know that your Sky Stream is fully loaded when the Sky logo disappears, and you’re sent to the home screen.
2. Connect Your Sky to the Internet
There are two ways to connect Sky Stream puck to the internet.
One way is to enable the WiFi feature and connect to your wireless network or disable the WiFi and use a direct Ethernet link, which is more secure compared to the wireless limitations.
How to Connect Sky Stream to the Wi-Fi?
- From the main screen, go to the “Settings.”
- Then, scroll down to the “Network” section.
- Next, select a 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi setup.
- Select the broadband WiFi SSID to connect.
- Insert the correct password for the network.
How to Connect Sky Stream via Ethernet?
- Verify that the Ethernet cable is long enough.
- Connect one end to a yellow router port.
- Plug the other end into the Sky Stream puck.
- Go to “Status” to check if you’re connected.
Note: Your Sky Stream puck should be online before proceeding!
3. Add the Media to the Sky Puck Playlist
When your Sky Stream box is connected to the internet, it’s time to find a program that you want to record for later viewing.
When you find the program you would like recorded, you must play the streaming on your Sky Stream box, at least temporarily.
When the media that you would like to record is currently playing, press the “+” Plus button on the Sky Stream remote.
This action will add the program to your “Playlist”, and every episode of the selected show, past, present, or future, will be added there.
4. Watch Recordings from the Playlist
To access your Sky Stream playlist and watch a recording of episodes from the recently added program, you must scroll down from the main screen.
When you’re at the slideshow menu, highlight the “Playlist” tile and press “Select” on your Sky Stream remote.
This will redirect you to your playlist, where you’ll find the added program.
Then, simply press “Play” to start from the beginning or “Continue” if you have already watched.
5. Remove Unwanted Sky Recordings
You don’t need to worry about running out of storage on your Sky Stream box because there is no storage to worry about.
The Sky Stream puck doesn’t have storage and uses only an internet connection to stream added programs from the playlist via cloud services.
To remove a show from your Sky Stream playlist, go to the program, highlight “Remove Series,” and press “Select.”
This will remove the program from the Sky Stream playlist, and if you want to re-watch the series, you can add the program back to the playlist anytime.
Remember that there is no deletion; you simply remove the shortcut for the show from your playlist, so the process happens instantly.
How to Record Episodes on Sky Stream?
Well, you don’t actually need to record episodes on your Sky Stream to watch them whenever you want.
As discussed, you must only add the program to the playlist, and then you’ll have access to all episodes from the show on demand.
To view specific episodes, start from the main screen and scroll down to the “Playlist” option from the slideshow menu.
Then, select an included program that you would like to view on demand and scroll down to reveal all past, current, and future episodes.
What Media Can You Record on Sky Stream?
Clearly, the “Playlist” feature or the “recording” does not work on everything you can view on your Sky Stream.
So, if you can’t view something, you can’t add the program to the Sky playlist hence, you can’t keep a recording of on-demand episodes.
On many Sky channels, the way of saving the content works differently!
Channels Recording in a Cloud
The so-called “Cloud Recording” is not a thing with the Sky Stream.
When you add a program to your “playlist,” you can stream only episodes that have already aired, which is the only thing that resembles cloud-like features.
The term “recording” is not accurate here, and the proper way to refer to the playlist saving is “streaming” instead.
However, before an episode officially airs on Sky, you can’t add it to your Sky playlist, so you must wait for episodes to be released before you can “record” them…
Third-Party Application Storage
Some programs on your Sky Stream will redirect you to their dedicated application, which is pre-installed on your Sky Stream puck.
When you highlight, for example, ITVX and press the “+” button on the remote, the episodes will still be viewable in the playlist, but to stream any of them, the box will open the ITVX application.
Here’s all media on your Sky Stream that can be “recorded” this way:
- BBC iPlayer
- Channel 4
- ITVX
- STV Player
- My5
Simply put, the content is on-demand if there is a dedicated application for a program you would like to save.
You can view the media anytime with on-demand content without recording or saving anything.
Reminder: To stream “recorded” programmes on Sky Stream, the box must be connected to WiFi or via an Ethernet cable to your router.
Some Media is Only *Live View*
At last, we’ve got the Live TV, which can’t be recorded.
For example, Music Channels and News Programmes can be added to the playlist, but you can only restart or watch them whenever there is a live broadcast.
After you hit the “+” button, the media appearing in the Playlist will only be a shortcut for the actual streaming source.
Hence, again, we don’t have an actual recording; instead, the Sky Stream only uses an internet connection to access the source for your streaming content.
