Optus Email Not Working – Quick Ways to Fix
Tip: Follow the solutions in chronological order!
1. Set Up Optus Email Correctly
The first and most crucial step is to set up your Optus mail correctly, based on the app you will use.
The operating system of your Optus device matters a lot because the mailing applications are different, and the correct way to set up the mailing system differs.
So, we’ve prepared a guide on what to do based on the device and system!
Microsoft Outlook 365
If your Optus email is not working with Outlook, here’s what to do:
- Open Outlook 365 on the device.
- From the Menu, go to the File tab.
- Then, click on the “Add Account.”
- Insert your email address correctly.
- Then go to the “Advanced Options.”
- Check “Let me set up my account.”
- Click on “Connect” and then “IMAP.”
- Finally, insert the following settings:
- Outgoing Mail Server: mail.optusnet.com.au
- Incoming Mail Server: mail.optusnet.com.au
- Username: Your email name (before the “@”).
- Password: Insert your Optus email password.

- Tap “Other” and then “Add Mail Account”.
- Insert Username, address, and password.

Note: To change your email Fetch settings, go to Settings → Mail → Accounts → Fetch New Data → Push → select your fetch frequency.
2. Verify the Internet Connection
If your Optus email settings are configured correctly, but you can’t send/receive, you may need to check whether the internet connection on your device is intact.
We recommend checking if you can surf online and whether the internet access on your device is affected.
If you’re offline, you must perform some troubleshooting, so here are a few methods:
- Power cycle your modem for 60 seconds.
- Reconnect your device to Wi-Fi/Ethernet.
- Forget and connect to your Wi-Fi network.
If you’re confident that your internet is intact, but your Optus email is not working, keep reading!
3. Check Your Network Port 25
A known bug with Optus email prevents the user from sending emails, but they can receive them, so if you’re within this scope, this solution is for you.
The issue happens because Optus is blocking a port on your network, so to unlock this port, you’ll need a computer connected to the Optus network.
To solve the problem, you must run a command into the command prompt/shell/terminal based on your device’s operating system.
For Windows 8, 8.1, 10, and 11
- On your computer, click on the Start Menu.
- Then, type “PowerShell” and open the tab.
- Then, write the following command correctly:
- tnc mail.optusnet.com.au -port 25
Note: If you’re using Windows 7, type the same command in the CMD (Command Prompt).
For macOS and OSX:
- Open the Terminal on your Apple computer.
- In the Terminal, insert the following command:
- curl -v telnet://mail.optusnet.com.au:25
If you see a message that tells you “Connected,” congratulations your email is working!
If you see a message telling you that your computer couldn’t connect to the Optus mail service on port 25, then you can solve the issue.
This is an issue that only Optus can fix, hence, you’ll need to contact them and discuss the resolution.
4. Check for ongoing NBN Outage
If you’ve tried all the steps and your Optus email is not working, you must check for an ongoing nbn outage.
When your services are temporarily down, your email won’t work hence, you can’t send or receive emails.
The quickest way to check for ongoing outages is by going to nbn Co Status and inserting your full address to check for geological outages.
If there’s an outage, there isn’t much that you can do.
You must wait until the services are back and then check whether your Optus email is working.
If there are no outages, continue reading!
Note: Outages may last for hours!
5. Check for Exceeded Mail Limit
If you can send an Optus email but can’t receive it, check whether you’ve exceeded the Optus mail limitation.
You can use your third-party app to manage your emails or log into the Optus Webmail and go from there.
If your inbox is complete, you won’t receive any new emails until there is available space, so we recommend deleting emails you no longer need.
You can quickly delete unneeded emails by following these steps:
- Sign in to the Optus webmail on your device.
- First, go to Spam, check all emails, and Delete.
- Then, from the menu, go to the “Deleted Items.”
- In there, select all emails and erase everything.
- Finally, enter the “Sent Folders” and clear them.
Reminder: Don’t forget to use the same Optus account!
6. Inspect Your Optus Account
It’s possible that the Optus email system is not working because of a limitation or suspension lifted over your account.
This is why it’s essential to sign into your Optus account and check for any unpaid fees, inactivity restrictions, and unidentified access.
To check your billing information, you can use the Optus Website or My Optus App to find out whether the most recent payment has been processed.
You can discover the information under the “Billing” tab once you’re signed in to your Optus account.
If there are no restrictions on your Optus account, keep reading!
