Step #1: Check Your New Home for Compatibility
Before you move into your new home, you want to make sure that the heating system will work with your Nest Thermostat.
It’s also not just about compatibility.
But some systems are more complicated than others. If you find out your home has those, you might need professional help to get your thermostat up and running.
Here’s how to check your new heating system’s compatibility:
- 24 V heating systems are compatible.
- Oil, electricity, and natural gas types are compatible.
- You will only need to know the type of heating system.
- Check Nest’s Compatibility Checker to make sure.
Note: Nest Thermostats are usually compatible with most heating systems unless your new home uses a high-current or proprietary one.
Step #2: Reset Your Thermostat to Factory Settings
After you make sure that you can install your Nest Thermostat in your new place, you want to start the uninstall process.
You want to do this correctly so you will not have a hard time setting it up with the app later. If you forget, your thermostat can get confused and cause major malfunctions.

- Press the thermostat ring to access Quick View.
- Go to Settings.
- Turn the ring until you find Reset.

Step #3: Remove Thermostat from Your Nest App
Now that your Nest is reset to its factory settings, you can safely remove it from the Nest app.
You want to do this to make sure that you don’t run into any problems when you set it up again.
You want to set it up clean on your new home, and any remnants from your old installation can cause issues.
Here’s how to remove your Nest Thermostat from your Nest app:
- Open your Nest app and go to Settings.
- Select Nest Thermostat.
- Navigate to the option that says Remove Nest Thermostat.

Note: If you set up your thermostat on the Home app, you can remove it by selecting Delete and terminate access to Google Nest devices.
Step #4: Remove Your Nest Thermostat

Installing your Nest Thermostat is the complete opposite of Step #4. If you recently removed it, you will have no problem mounting it to the wall and connecting the wires.
Here’s how to install your thermostat:
- Turn OFF power to your system using the circuit breaker or a switch.
- Mark the places where the screws will go.
- Attach the base of your Nest thermostat to the wall.
- Connect the wires based on the photo you took in Step #4.
- Attach the thermostat display to the base and turn it ON.
Note: The Nest Thermostat has a built-in bubble level for easy installation. You can always call a professional to help you out.
Step #6: Set Up Your Thermostat on the Nest App
You can now add your thermostat to the Nest app to start using it in your new home.
Since you moved from your old home, you should have a WiFi network running and a Nest account.
Linking the device and the app will require you to type in an Entry key. This will authenticate your device, allowing you to control it from anywhere.
Here’s how to set up your thermostat on the app:
- Go to Settings on your Nest Thermostat.
- Navigate to Nest app and select Get Entry Key.
- Open the Nest app on your phone and go to Settings.
- Select Add product, then Continue without scanning.
- Choose your thermostat and type in the entry key.
Note: Your thermostat will now appear on your app. You can now control it and change the settings using the app.
