How Can I Tell if My Optimum Modem is Not Working?
Before we start troubleshooting, let’s first determine if your modem really is the one at fault. It could be something else like your power, Optimum’s database, or any other possible cause.
There are key things to note to know if your modem isn’t working or functioning properly.
Check the Lights
The lights on our modems can give us all the information we need to know. Most, if not all modems would have different lights.
All these lights mean something relevant to how your connection to the internet would be.
While different modems would have different lights, there are a couple of things that are always present:
- Wireless Capability
If you notice that the light on the internet symbol is not like how it is usually, there’s a problem.
When this occurs, you can already arrive at the conclusion that it’s something to do with the network, not your modem.
How’s the Modem Hardware?
Another thing to note and to find would be the components of your modem. Are your cables still intact? Don’t they have any cracks, bulges, or splits?
It would be wise to have a comprehensive check-up of your hardware. Even if it’s new, the delivery could have caused some parts to be damaged.
So, it will be wise to check if there are any broken parts of your modem.
Was the Self-Installation Successful?
When you first received your modem, you will usually have to perform self-installation. Unless, of course, a technician delivered it and they offered you a hand in installing it.
So, if you think that your new Optimum modem is not working, see if it was activated successfully.
Make sure that the activation was successful because the problem might lie there.
These are just some of the things you can check to determine if the modem’s the problem.
If it’s activated successfully, but you’re still not getting anything, don’t call for help yet. Try this method – the method that saved thousands of Optimum subscribers from their dilemma.
Troubleshooting Optimum Modem Not Working
In case you are unsure of how to solve this mystery, follow this guide! This will be a complete step-by-step process of what you must do!
Step #1: Contact Optimum and Ask If There’s an Outage
Before you move, the very first thing you want to do is to check for an outage.
You might be in an area where they are doing repairs and maintenance, so, contact Optimum and ask.
You can even follow the Company’s social media profiles, as they keep posting recent updates which include outages as well.
If there is an outage, you are already clear that your modem isn’t the problem. But if there is none, follow the next steps.
Step #2: Power Outage
The problem might be because you are having a power outage. To check, try and see if you have electricity with other appliances.
If your lighting is electrically connected, try turning it on. If it does not the problem is with power, not the modem.
Step #3: Check All Hardware
It goes without saying that a broken part on your modem can cause the entire thing to malfunction. So, check the entire device for any broken or damaged components.
Look out for any tears on the wires and cables and any broken or missing chips. It’s also in this step where you need to check and see if the coax cable is tightened and secure.
You can go and detach then reattach the coaxial cable to be 100% sure that it’s properly connected.
Step #4: Perform a Power Cycle or a Restart
Once you have done all that, the next thing you want to do is to restart your modem.
Power cycling has done a lot of wonders in the world of technology; this can be the fix you are looking for, too.
To power cycle, don’t just restart the modem by turning it off. Unplug it from the main power source. You can choose to unplug the power cord at the back of the modem or unplug it from the wall outlet.
Before you plug it back in, wait for a few seconds (around 15 to 20 seconds).
Step #5: Reset Your Optimum Modem
Your last resort would be to perform a complete reset of your Optimum modem. To do this, simply follow these steps:
- Locate the modem’s reset button.
- Using the thin pointy object, press and hold the reset button for about 30 seconds.
- Then, unplug the modem from power for 30 seconds.
- Lastly, connect it to power back in again.
- When it turns back on, it should be reset back to its factory settings.
- Look for the default user login and password to connect to it.
It’s always a better option to look at the Modem settings and note them down. For this before the “Reset” steps, login into your Modem using any browser.
However, in case you need assistance during the Re-Login process or the Modem setup, you can always reach out to Optimum support.
You can’t let go of the reset button during the process. And that is how you fix the Optimum modem that’s not working!
It is easy and pretty straightforward, right? You don’t need to know any advanced features or technicality!
My Optimum Modem is Still Not Working, What Should I Do?
