Why Use Your Own Router with FIOS Quantum?
FIOS Quantum offers excellent services partnered up with reliable customer service.
However, the vast majority of people want to use their router with the FIOS Quantum gateway.
Here are some of the reasons why:
Save Up on Equipment Fees
The primary reason why people choose to use their routers is that they will be able to save up on the monthly recurring charges of equipment fees on their billing.
In case you were not aware when they lease equipment to you, you are paying for them monthly. Escape this charge by using a router that you own1
Better Performance
Another reason would be the fact that you can get better performance, especially if your router is better, newer, and more advanced than what they are leasing you.
Truth be told – they don’t offer top-of-the-line routers, they usually lease basic-to-moderate routers to their clients.
If you are more of a tech-savvy type of person and you want everything to be intact, especially with the router, you might not be satisfied with what it can give you.
No Fear of Breakage or Damage
Last, but most definitely not least would be fear – fear of damaging or breaking the router.
Since it’s going to be leased to you, you have to return it to them in the same exact shape and condition that you received it.
Otherwise, you will be charged fees for the replacement or the repair of the router.

How to Use My Own Router with FIOS Quantum?
Let’s cut to the chase – here’s the comprehensive guide and procedure to use a personal router with your FIOS Quantum.
Step #1: Prepare Your Router
The first thing you need to do is to prepare the new router you will be using.
Whether it’s new or old, you need to make sure that you have everything prepared – from the cables, wires, and even the spare parts of the router.
NOTE:
It’s also worth checking if the router is enabled with coax or an Ethernet connection.
If it’s a coax connection and you’re using it now with your current FIOS Quantum router, it’s all good. If it’s not the same, proceed to the next step, which is…
Step #2: Contact FIOS to Change the Connection Type
The next thing you want to do is to contact FIOS to change the connection type.
If you are using a coax cable for the ONT to router connection, you would have to contact Verizon to tell them to switch from coax to Ethernet. The same thing goes if the situation is vice versa.
On the contrary, if what you are using now has the same connection type as the new router, then you can skip this step and go to the next step, which is…
Step #3: Release FIOS Router’s IP Address
Doing this step would allow the ONT to assign the correct IP address to the new router.
It would not have any leftovers of data, so you can be sure that you’ll get a good-quality connection.
Here’s how you can release the IP address of the current router that you have.
- Log into your router by going to myfiosgatey or 192.168.1.1. The user ID and password will be pasted on your router.
- Once you’re in, go to My Network > Network Connections.
- From there, go to Broadband Connection (Ethernet or Coax)
- On that same page, go to Properties > Settings.
- Click the button that says Release and Apply or Save Changes.
Step #4: Factory Reset the Router
This step is imperative to ensure that you will get fresh services from your new router.
You can perform the factory reset by pressing and holding the Reset button on the back of the router for about 5 to 8 seconds.
Alternatively, you can reset it also by logging into your router and selecting Restore Factory Defaults from there.
You can see it in Advanced > Save & Restore > Restore Options.
Step #5: Connect Your New Router
Unplug the Ethernet cable out of the FIOS router and plug it into the new router. Automatically, the new router should detect the signal that is from the ONT box.
Follow the on-screen instructions to be able to set the new device up.
That’s it! That is how easy and simple it is to use your personal router with FIOS Quantum!
