Sky Go stuck on checking for updates indefinitely, and you’re wondering what to do?
Well, if you’re using Windows 10 or 11, then you’re one of the many, facing this problem. The issue typically comes from your Windows security, such as Firewall or Antivirus.
Sometimes this issue appears because of the Sky Go installer or simply due to your internet and/or WiFi.
When your Sky Go is stuck on checking for updates, first end the process from the Task Manager and then set Sky Go as an exception through the Windows Firewall.
If that doesn’t help, manually erase the Sky Go data folders or perform a clean reinstallation!
Let’s continue to unwrap!
Why is the Sky Go App Stuck on Checking for Updates?
So, being “stuck” during updates resembles an infinite loading and loading.
This is a prime indication that something is wrong with your Sky Go application.
In case you’ve waited long enough to confirm that something with the Sky Go app is not ok, here is what this might be:
There are other factors, such as antivirus software, VPN, and network Proxy, which can also stop your Sky Go app access and prevent updates. So, in the guide below, we’ll cover everything!
How to Fix Sky Go Stuck on Checking For Updates?
Tip: Follow the steps consecutively!
1. End the Sky Go App Process!
If you’ve waited more than 10 minutes and Sky Go is still “checking for updates,” then it’s time to manually end the process and try again.
On Windows, you can end processes from the Task Manager, which you can open by right-clicking on your Taskbar and selecting the tile.
Then you’ll need to go to “Processes” from the tabs above and locate the Sky Go service from the list.
When you find the software process, right-click on the tile and select “End Task.”
This will ultimately shut down the Sky Go app, so you can freshly re-enter and test whether the updates will pass through.
Tip: To find the Sky Go app process easily, in the Task Manager > Processes, press the “S” keyboard key repeatedly to cycle through all apps starting with the letter “S.”
2. Set Sky GO as a Firewall Exception
The never-ending Sky Go “checking for updates” is commonly caused by Windows Firewall, so if you’re a Windows user, don’t skip this step.
Here we will not disable your default layer of security; we will only teach you how to set Sky Go as an “exception,” which prevents any software conflicts.
Note: The steps below apply to Windows 10 and 11.
- First, kill the Sky Go process from the Task Manager.
- Then, click on the “Start Menu” from the Taskbar.
- Then, type “Windows Security” in the search field.
- Next, select “Firewall and Network Protection.”
- Click “Allow an App Through Firewall” in the menu.
- Then, click on “Change Settings” to add exceptions.
- If Sky Go is not on the list, click “Add Another App.”
- Go to AppData/Roaming and find the SkyGo.exe file.
- Select the installer to allow it through the Firewall.
Also, Disable Your Antivirus!
If you receive a pop-up prompt from your antivirus every time you open Sky Go, there may be a conflict there as well.
If your antivirus software kills the Sky Go process, the update will never complete, so it’s worth checking whether disabling your antivirus would help in this case.
Tip: There is an option to suppress your antivirus for a predetermined time, such as 2 minutes, three minus or 5 minutes.
3. Clear or Backup the Sky Go Data!
If you didn’t know, upon installing Sky Go, the installer creates two separate folders located in the AppData/Roaming.
This is where the application’s data is stored on a Windows computer, and when there is corruption or fault during the installation, the app won’t work well.
The easiest solution is to back up or delete the folders in order to allow Sky Go to create new and fresh data the next time you open the app.
- C:\Users\{NAME}\AppData\Roaming\Sky
- C:\Users\{NAME}\AppData\Roaming\Sky Go
The two folders are “Sky” and “Sky Go”; you can simply rename or delete them.
Keep in mind that erasing them will permanently delete any settings that you might like to recover later, so just in case, we recommend renaming the folders with something else.
Reminder: The Sky Go app must be closed before you can delete the data folders, so if you receive any errors, kill the application’s process first.
4. Optimise Your Internet And WiFi
One of the apparent reasons Sky Go would get stuck on “checking for updates” is when your internet or WiFi is very slow or completely offline.
So, to quickly verify this theory, kill the Sky Go app process, and test whether everything with the internet on your device is intact.
If you detect any downtime, fluctuations, or interruptions, follow these steps:
- First, power cycle your network router via unplugging!
- Then verify that you can surf the web and stream videos.
- If you’re using WiFi, forget the connection and reconnect.
- Another tip for WiFi users is to get closer to the WiFi router.
- For users with an Ethernet connection, reconnect the cable.
- Relieve bandwidth by disconnecting devices from the WiFi.
- Perform a free internet speed test to measure the results.
Note: When your internet is slow, the Sky Go app might take exceptionally long while checking for updates.
5. Uninstall and Reinstall Sky Go!
One of the most potent solutions is to completely erase the Sky Go software and verify that you’re downloading the app from the official source.
In order for this to work, you’ll have to open the Windows Control Panel and uninstall the program from there.
- First, use the Start to open the Control Panel.
- Then, click on the “Programs & Features” option.
- Scroll down in the list to find the Sky Go software.
- Click on the Sky Go tile, and then select “Uninstall.”
- Follow the on-screen prompts to remove the app.
- Then, go to the official Sky Go Download Page.
- Scroll down and click “Windows – download the app.”
- When SkyGo.exe is downloaded, install the app.
When the application is ready, the “checking for updates” screen shouldn’t last longer than 20 to 30 seconds.
After this, you can sign in to the app and start streaming Sky error-free!
6. Reboot Your Windows Computer
Sometimes, even if rarely, Windows applications, such as Sky Go, fail to work due to a fault with the Windows operating system.
The quickest way to exclude this possibility would be by going to the “Start” menu, selecting the “Power” icon, and then the “Restart” option.
We would also recommend taking this method one step further and performing a “Shutdown,” which will also help against overheating and power faults.
When your computer is fully loaded, open the Sky Go app and test whether the updates will finally pass through.
Tip: Double-check whether your internet connection is intact!
7. Check for Sky Go Service Outages!
If nothing helps, and everything on your side appears intact, Sky Go is checking for updates; perhaps the fault is on their side.
So, to quickly check for any Sky service outages, go to the official Sky Status, and check under the “Streaming TV” and “Sky TV apps” sections.
If you see red and there are known issues in your area, you might be unable to use the Sky Go app until they address the problem.
So remain patient and if you need more personalised help, go to the Sky Help page and contact their customer service. Best of luck!
Reminder: Don’t forget to check whether the Sky Go updates will pass through after an hour!
Quick Recap:
Whenever Sky Go stuck on checking for updates, you first need to end the Sky Go task from the Task Manager and set the app as a Firewall exception.
In addition, you should erase the Sky Go data folders, inspect your internet connection and reinstall Sky Go!
