If you ever come across the Sky connection to broadband router fail situation, don’t panic. You usually wouldn’t need to schedule a visit from a Sky expert or technician to fix it.
With our tutorial, you will finally be able to get rid of this error. The best part about it is that you don’t need to be experienced to accomplish it.
To fix the broadband router failure, try to perform a reboot or a power cycle of your Sky box followed by your broadband router. Check if the Sky box’s firmware is on its latest version. After that, change the wireless frequency of the box from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz for a better range.
It can be extremely annoying when the Sky Box’s connection to broadband router fails.
And in order for us to arrive at the best resolution, we need to make sure that we know what the culprit is.
Identifying the usual causes will be extremely difficult because we’re not sure if the problem is with the Sky box or with the broadband router.
But, the most common culprits for this adverse situation include:
- Internet/connection problems
- The box isn’t detecting the router or vice versa (distance issues)
- Outdated firmware
- Overload of the hardware (both the box and the broadband router).
With this information in mind, we’ll find the resolution to the problem easier and faster.

Start the troubleshooting procedure by power cycling or rebooting the Sky box.
A lot of times, people tend to forget that they could be overworking their boxes. And restarting or rebooting it is usually the only solution for it.
To power cycle, your Sky box, turn the Sky box off either via the remote or the front panel.
Then, unplug it from the mains. Furthermore, turn off and deactivate all devices connected to the box (including TV, router, etc.)
Leave all devices turned off or deactivated for about 5 to 10 minutes. Then, finally, turn all devices back on again.
The next step is to make sure that the firmware or software of your Sky box is up to date.
What this gives you is the assurance that your Sky box is operating on the latest version it can.
To be able to update the software or firmware of the box, you need it to go into download mode.
- Press and hold [STANDBY] on your clicker and turn the box off at the mains.
- Leave it in this state for about five (5) minutes.
- Then, press and hold [BACKUP] on the box while you turn it back on at the mains.
- Keep the [BACKUP] button pressed for about 30 seconds.
- Release it when you see four (4) lights on the box’s front panel to light up.
Now that you were able to go into download mode, updating the software is easy.
After you do the 5-step process above, when the box boots back up, it should say Updating System Software. Wait for the software to fully update (usually around 10 minutes) before doing anything.
You’ll know that it’s done when it switches to standby mode by itself. When it does, wait about five (5) minutes before turning the box on again via the clicker.
By default, Sky boxes are set to 2.4 GHz. And, the mesh of Sky boxes utilises a 5 GHz setting. Therefore, it’s just right to change it from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz for the system to detect it.
2.4 GHz is the frequency used for farther and longer-distance connections. 5 GHz, on the other hand, is for better performance and faster data transmittance.
- Highlight Settings on your Sky box (don’t press Select).
- While the selector is on Settings, press 0-0-1 on your clicker.
- Navigate to Network > 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
- Turn on 5 GHz by toggling the slider.
- You could also change the channels by highlighting the frequency and pressing Select.
NOTE: For the channels, 1, 6, and 11 are the best.
As an added process, you want to change the WiFI channel your broadband router is using.
Since the box uses a 5 GHz mesh, you want to set the frequency to 5 GHz, as well as the corresponding channels, too.
- Access your router’s address by opening a browser.
- Then, type the IP of the router into the address bar.
- Enter the username and password for the admin configuration login.
- Once in, navigate to Advanced Settings > Wireless.
- Locate the channels on the dropdown menu.
- Select the appropriate channels (1, 6, 11, and 36) from the list.
Once these are all done, reposition or relocate the box or the router. Make sure that their placement is directly complementing each other.
Since the boxes are more versatile, you want to readjust the position of the boxes. There’s actually no rule on how to do it (it will depend on where the telly is).
NOTE: Avoid placing it near speakers or any other equipment/appliances that could block out signals/reception.
Lastly, perform a network settings reset of the Sky box. Doing so will let your Sky box operate and function from a clean slate.
It will be reverted to the settings when you first got/purchased it.
- On your Sky clicker, press [HOME].
- Then, navigate to Settings > Setup > Network.
- From there, you’ll see many different options, select Reset.
- Confirm the prompt or the pop-up that will appear asking if you’re sure.
Once done, you just have to wait for the unit to reinitialize!
NOTE: Resetting the network will completely erase all saved data on the box. So, you’ll have to perform the modification of WiFi channels on the box again (step #3).
Should the 5-step process deem ineffective, try connecting your Sky box to your broadband router via an Ethernet cable.
To do this, you simply have to reset the network settings of your Sky box, and then plug an Ethernet cable connected to your router to the Ethernet port.
NOTE: A wired connection will give the Sky box a new name. Therefore, you need to reconnect all the mini boxes (if you have them) to the main box again.

The problem could be with the box itself that you might already need to replace it. They could also suggest using a booster to further the connectivity of the broadband router.
