It might lose connection if the port is not functioning properly or there is damage to the cables. It is best to figure out the main cause to take the best action.

How to Fix Netgear Router WAN Port Not Working
When fixing a Netgear router WAN port not working, always start with the simplest yet effective solution.
Try restarting your Netgear router first before moving on to more advanced methods.
To restart your router, shut off all connected devices, from your laptops to personal computers. Power off your router and modem, then wait a few moments.
Finally, turn on your devices in the following order: modem, router, and connected devices.
If a simple restart doesn’t solve the issue, proceed to the solutions below.
Solution #1: Power Cycle Your Netgear Router using Nighthawk
Sometimes, a restart is all that’s needed to solve basic connectivity issues.
However, there are cases when it’s not enough, especially when the problem involves your device’s memory.
If the bug is in your router’s memory, it will return the moment you turn it on.
The way to fix this would be to discharge your router, as it’s the only way to flush out the contents of its memory module.

Solution #3: Do a Loopback Test on Your Router’s WAN Port
Perform a loopback test to determine whether your Netgear router is working properly. It’s a test that will let you know if certain ports are still working.
This is an easy step to take since you don’t need another device.
You simply want to connect a port on your router with another one. You’ll know the results by looking at the LED notification lights.
Here’s how to perform a loopback test on your Netgear router:

You also don’t want to set it to static since if someone already owns the IP address you want, your router won’t connect to the internet.
Here’s how to enable Dynamic DNS on your router:
- Log in to your router’s web interface.
- Go to the Advanced tab, then select Advanced Setup.
- Choose Dynamic DNS.
- Select Use a Dynamic DNS Service, then Netgear.
Note: Make sure the IP address listed matches the WAN IP address of your Netgear router.
