If your Internet disconnects when downloading large files, there can be various issues with your Wi-Fi connection.
However, you should be able to fix them with simple solutions. This article will help you understand the problem and offer troubleshooting tips you can do on your own.
If your Wi-Fi keeps dropping while downloading large files, there may be problems with your router’s configuration. To fix this, disable certain features to ensure your devices can connect reliably and securely to your network.
When you download a large file, you download thousands of small packages of data.
Sometimes, these small packets do not reach their destination due to network congestion, high CPU usage, security attacks, and software/hardware bugs.
Reasons Why Internet Disconnects When Downloading Large Files
If you understand why your Internet disconnects when you download large files, you can overcome the problem easily.
Here are the common culprits and their fixes:
Wrong Network Configuration
The most likely reason your Wi-Fi disconnects when downloading large files is incorrect network settings. Change the settings on your router to resolve Wi-Fi issues.
But, before you do that, back up your router’s settings in case you need to restore them.
Then, Forget the Network on all devices previously connected to your W-Fi when rejoining the network.
Traffic Overload
When your download suddenly stops, there may be traffic overload. Your router is handling too many processes at once, like streaming and downloading large files.
You may need to exchange your router with one strong enough to handle many tasks. You may also add a second router or perform preventive measures, such as monitoring your task manager.
Service Provider Outage
Check your Internet Service Provider. There may be glitches in their system, and they are doing some maintenance work to restore the connection.
This is the likely culprit if all network connections in your area keep dropping. You may want to postpone your download when there is no Internet timeout.
Router or Modem Issues
If you are experiencing some issues with your Wi-Fi, it may be because your router gets disconnected from your service provider’s network.
Fortunately, a simple reboot can sort out the problem. Use the Power button to switch off your router. Then, unplug it.
Note: Don’t confuse the power button with the reset button. The reset button will reset your router to its factory settings.
You will need to insert a new SSID, password, and security key.
If you know what makes your Internet disconnect when you are downloading large files, you can easily fix the issue.
Often, a simple reboot can do the trick. Otherwise, you may need to change settings or update your router’s firmware.
How to Prevent Internet Disconnecting When Downloading Large Files
Do not panic if your WiFi disconnects from Internet when downloading large files. We compiled a list of basic solutions that can fix the issue.
Solution #1: Check the Cables On Your Router and Devices
In some rare instances, the problem can occur if the cables on your router and devices are broken or damaged. To fix the issue, you need to replace the network cables.
Note: Make sure your router is online. It should be connected to your modem, which should be connected to your Ethernet port.
If you see a solid light on the front of your router, it means you have restored your Internet connection.
Solution #2: Reboot Your Router and PC
Sometimes, your modem gets disconnected from your Internet Service Provider. Reboot your router and PC to solve the issue.
- Use the power button to turn off the devices.
- Unplug your router and PC.
- Turn them On again.
If rebooting your router does not work, you can perform a hard factory reset to solve the issue. But, you will need to start from scratch.
- Turn the Asus router OFF.
- Press and hold the WPS button, then turn the router ON.
- Keep holding the WPS button until you see the power light is ON.
- Release the WPS button when the light flashes.
- When the light stops flashing, your Asus router will reboot automatically.
Note: You will have to insert new usernames, passwords, and security keys.
Solution #3: Flush DNS on your Router and Renew Your IP Address
Flushing the DNS will clear your IP addresses and other DNS records from your cache. It can help resolve Internet connectivity issues and many more.
- Press the Windows Key + X to open the Win + X menu.
- Select Admin.
- When it opens, run the [ipconfig /flushdns] command.
Note: It is important to recognize that your DNS cache will clear itself out without your intervention.
Solution #4: Upgrade or Downgrade your Router Firmware
Other common reasons your Internet gets disconnected include low performance, weak signal, and a lack of the newest features.
To overcome these bugs and security attacks, you need to get and run the latest firmware.
- Connect your PC to your router using your Ethernet Cable or Wi-Fi.
- Open your browser and navigate to WebGUI.
- Enter your login credentials and Sign In.
- You will get a popup message if a new firmware is available.
- Click Update Now.
Note: When directed to the Administration > System page, click on Firmware Upgrade and wait for a few minutes until the download is complete.
Once done, sign in to the web UI again and follow on-screen instructions. Reset your router.
Solution #5: Use a Wired Ethernet Connection
Ethernet is naturally faster than a Wi-Fi connection. It is also more stable and secure. If your Wi-Fi signal is too weak to download large files, use a wired Ethernet connection.
- Plugin your Ethernet cable into your computer.
- Plug the other end of the cable into one of your Ethernet’s ports.
- You should now be able to establish a connection.
- Check if this solves the issue.
Note: Ethernet offers the advantages of better speed, low latency, and more reliable connections, making it excellent for downloading large files.
Solution #6: Consider Using a VPN When Downloading
Some Internet providers restrict downloads of large files like Torrent files for security and legal reasons.
To keep this from getting in the way of your downloads, consider using a VPN.
- Download your VPN app and choose a plan.
- Set up your VPN service.
- Connect to a VPN server.
Note: VPNs connect to one of the many locations, allowing you to enjoy the Internet with security and privacy.
If your Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting when you download large files, reboot your router and computer. Sometimes, simply switching off your devices can solve the issue. If the problem persists, perform a hard reset.
