Wondering how to get WiFi with no Ethernet Plug in your home? Keep reading.
The Ethernet Connection is not the only way to use WiFi but it’s proven to be faster than the wireless connection which is expected but not necessary for all users.
In this guide, we’ll discuss methods to establish our own WiFi without having any Ethernet Plugs in our home!
To get WiFi without an Ethernet Plug users need to share a hotspot from their mobile devices and either connect wirelessly to the new WiFi or use a USB cable to connect to a stationary device. In both cases, you don’t need Ethernet Plug to connect to the network.
Let’s next learn more about the Ethernet Plugs and whether we need them.
About The Ethernet Plugs!
The Ethernet Plugs also called “inputs” can be found on many smart home devices such as TVs, Consoles, and Computers.
We use the Ethernet Inputs to connect an Ethernet cable, which on its end is connected to a Network Router to supply our devices with the internet.
There are ways to get internet when you don’t have an Ethernet Plug on your device!
When your device does not have an Ethernet Plug, chances are that there is a WLAN card that will allow us to connect to the WiFi.
However, when you don’t have a network router there is not much you can do except for sharing a hotspot from your mobile.
Let’s learn more!
How to Get WiFi with no Ethernet Plug?
Here we’ll discuss different methods that you can attempt now to acquire a WiFi connection without an Ethernet Plug.
We’ll focus only on a wireless connection to unwrap the choices you’ve got and help you connect to the WiFi in a matter of minutes!
Let’s learn more!
Method 1. Share a Hotspot
The very first and most efficient way to establish a home WiFi network without any Ethernet Plugs or Cables to be involved is to share a hotspot from a cellular device.
This is an easy method to use your cellular data and your device would act like a network router.
Let’s learn how to share a hotspot from our cellular device in easy steps!
Step #1 Disable the WiFi
The very first step is to disable the WiFi in order to be able to share a hotspot.
On iOS devices simply go to Settings then choose the WiFi Tab and Toggle OFF the WiFi.
On Android, you can drop down the Quick Menu and tap on the WiFi once to disable the feature.
Step #2 Enable Hotspot
The next step is to enable the hotspot on your mobile device. The feature can be found in the Quick Menu for Androids but iOS users have to go to Settings.
After that, locate the Personal Hotspot tab, from where the cellular WiFi can be enabled.
On Android smartphones, users also have to open the settings of the hotspot by either holding the icon in the Quick Menu or opening the Settings to locate the Personal Hotspot.
- “Bluetooth is OFF?”
When this prompt appears, make sure to select Turn on WiFi and USB Only.
This will allow the wireless connection to be shared, therefore it will enable the WiFi automatically.
Step #3 Set Password
In case you’ve never used the mobile hotspot on your device before, the Password would be the default one which might be quite frustrating to type in on some devices.
In that regard, we need to change the Password to something easy to remember and hard to be guessed.
- The password has to be at least 8 characters!
On iOS the Password can be found in the Personal Hotspot tab, while on Android users need to go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > Tethering & Portable > Hotspot.
From there you can change the Hotspot’s name as well as the connection Password.
Step #4 Connect To Hotspot
When the Hotspot has been enabled, it would take a few moments for the WiFi to start appearing when the devices start discovering new connections. Be patient.
After a few short minutes, attempt to discover the newly created WiFi, shared from your cellular device.
It does not matter whether you’re using a TV, Console, Computer, or another smartphone, the WiFi is 2.4Ghz, which can be discovered by ALL devices with WLAN cards!
Tap on your WiFi connection and insert the password to connect.
Keep in mind that any user will be deducted from your Cellular Mobile Data.
When the Data is Unlimited, there is nothing to worry about and the Hotspot can be used as much as necessary.
Tip: Keep your smartphone (hotspot) as close as possible to the receiver!
Method 2. Use a USB Cable!
To learn how to install WiFi with no ethernet plug, again here we’re going to use the hotspot of your mobile device.
But instead of connecting to the WiFi, we can hook up to the device via USB, which lifts all wireless connection limitations!
This will provide the full speed of your cellular internet onto your computer/laptop!
Step #1 Connect Your Mobile Device
We won’t need an Ethernet cable for this connection but it depends on whether you’re connecting an Android or iOS device since the ports are different.
Let’s learn what cable we need.
- For newer Android devices – USB to USB Type-C Cable
- For older Android devices- USB to MicroUSB
- For iPhones, we need a USB to Lightning Cable
This is the only way to connect the smartphone to the computer.
When the hotspot device is connected to the receiver via USB cable we can proceed with enabling the hotspot.
Step #2 Enable The Hotspot
When we do not intend to connect Wirelessly we need to clarify that on our smartphones (hotspot devices) when enabling the feature.
Here’s how on both Android and iOS:
On Android > Settings > Network & Internet > Hotspot & Tethering > Enable Hotspot.
On IOS > Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot > Toggle ON Hotspot.
- When the Prompt appears, make sure to select “USB ONLY”.
In case the prompt does not appear when you Enable the Hotspot, make sure to disable the WiFi by going back into the Settings and then come back to re-toggle the Hotspot.
Step #3 Disable Auto Wireless Connections
When you’re trying to connect to your Cellular WiFi from a Windows computer and you’ve already plugged in the USB cable and enabled the Hotspot, we have one more task.
We need to stop the Automatic Wireless Connections to avoid issues.
Your computer might attempt to connect to Inaccessible Wireless Connections during our setup which might interfere with our operation.
In that regard follow the steps below:
- Click on the Notifications > Action Center > All Settings.
- Network & Internet.
- Select WiFi.
- Click on Related Settings > Change Adapter Options
- Network Connections.
- WiFi Status > Wireless Properties.
- Uncheck Connect Auto When This Network is in Range.
- Click on OK to save the settings.
That was how to get internet without ethernet cable and when you’re ready, check on the bottom right, whether you’re connected to the hotspot of your mobile device and test to surf the web.
You should now have a full-range internet connection without any Ethernet Cables or Plugs!
Note: Some computers might say that you’re connected via LAN.
Quick Recap:
Thus, you don’t need an Ethernet Plug or Cable to establish a home WiFi. Users can easily share a Wireless or Wired hotspot connection from their cellular devices and connect devices such as computers, consoles, and TVs without Ethernet Plug.
