Let’s jump into the guide!
Solution #1 Power Cycle the Problematic Receiver
The first and most easy solution of all is to Power Cycle the receiver that is having issues.
This is a simple way to refresh the software of the device and any bugs and glitches along.
It also works flawlessly whenever the device is experiencing charge-related issues or problems with the physical equipment and cables.
- A power cycle is achieved by cutting the power to the device!
Here’s how to power cycle your secondary DirecTV receiver in easy steps:
- Unplug the receiver from the power.
- Wait for 60 seconds, while the device is disconnected.
- Re-attach the power cable of the device to the source.
- Turn on the receiver by pressing its power button.
- Wait for the device to start and test…
The key to achieving the power cycle is keeping the receiver unplugged for long enough.
Although 60 seconds is standard, some users tend to keep it disconnected for up to 5 minutes, which could also greatly help.
Note: The longer you’ve kept the receiver unplugged, the better it’ll power cycle its hardware.
Solution #2 Reconnect the Coaxial Cable
If there’s a cabling problem with the receiver you’re getting the error 620 on, you should reconnect the coaxial cable.
It’s a smart solution that’ll settle reception issues with the device and potentially any faults with the cable itself.
Follow these instructions to reconnect the coaxial cable correctly:
- Locate where the coax cable goes into the back of the receiver.
- Unplug the coaxial cable from there.
- Follow to the second end of the cable.
- Unplug the second end of the coax.
- Wait for 60 seconds.
- Re-attach the coaxial cable on both ends.
It’s important to leave the cable unplugged for some amount of time.
This is used to release the storage electricity within the cable and by this happening, the signal coming from your main receiver Genie unit will also be refreshed.
Note: If the secondary receiver is connected wirelessly, disconnect it from the bridge.
Solution #3 Reinstall the Splitter
Separating the DirecTV signal so it could reach your secondary receiver boxes is usually done via a Splitter Device. This clever piece of technology has a coax port on one of the sides and two coax outputs on the other side.
This allows for “splitting” of the TV signal so the data could reach more than one receiver, as it is in “multiple-receiver setups”.
If the splitter developed an issue that’s causing some sort of interference with your secondary receivers, it’s best to try reinstalling and then replacing it.
- Disconnect the splitter from all cables, and wait for 10 seconds!
The video broadcast of your main Genie receiver will be interrupted the moment you uninstall the splitter. Therefore when you’re ready check if the error would appear.
Alert: Keep the splitter out of your setup for a while, in order for the device to discharge.
Solution #4 Reboot the DirecTV Video Bridge
Another cause for the DirecTV error code 620 to occur is whenever the main Genie unit has lost its connection to the DirecTV Wireless Video Bridge.
- The Wireless Video Bridge is located next to or near the main Genie receiver unit!
The Video Bridge is an optional device that you don’t necessarily have to install in your setup, and as the name suggests, it allows a wireless connection.
It’ll tie up with the main Genie DVR and you’ll have to connect the coax into the bridge, rather than the Genie receiver itself.
- To reboot the video bridge, press the Red Button for 5 seconds!
Once the red button is pressed, a process between a reboot and a reset will begin.
It shouldn’t take long for your Genie wireless video bridge to reboot and start delivering signals to your main Genie unit. All you have to do is sit still until the device finishes rebooting.
Note: The red button on the bridge must be held for a period between 5 and 10 seconds.
Solution #5 Renew your DirecTV Subscription
Not paying your DirecTV subscription fees, will cause all of your secondary DirecTV receivers connected to the main Genie unit’s connections to drop.
Once the signal reaching the main Genie device is interrupted, all of your currently-installed receivers will lose reception too, until the supply from DirecTV is reactivated.
To achieve that, you must make sure you have no pending fees towards DirecTV.
- Check your DirecTV account and make sure your monthly fees are paid.
If you did have unpaid dues, make sure to cover their expenses and wait for your signal to be reactivated. In case that’s not the culprit, continue with the next solution!
Note: It could take DirecTV up to an hour to restore the service if they had canceled it earlier.
Solution #6 Factory Reset the Main Genie Unit
Your last-resort solution is to perform a Factory Reset on the main Genie Receiver in your setup.
If there is a relationship between a software issue with the receiver and the 620 error code, this is definitely the way to go.
Alert: A Factory Reset will erase all stored information on your Genie Main Unit!
Here’s how to factory reset your Genie main unit in easy steps:
- Make sure that the device is plugged in.
- Locate the Reset Button on the back of the device (behind the card access door).
- Press and hold the Reset Button for about 15 – 20 seconds.
- Let go of the button once your receiver makes any kind of output.
- Wait for the Genie receiver to reset…
Once the factory reset has been triggered, it’s all about waiting for its full duration.
Based on the performance of your receiver, a reset could take up to 15 minutes, in order to erase all information, recordings, and settings configuration you’ve made on the software.
Note: Once the receiver is factory reset, you’ll be back at the setup page of the device.
