It could be a simple router-extender connection throttling that’s easy to spot, but it could also be due to inappropriate network settings configuration!
To fix when D-Link WiFi Extender is connected but there is no internet, Hard Reset the device and configure the extender’s Network Settings. After that, connect your WiFi devices to the extender’s network and flush the DNS of your router!

D-Link WiFi Extender No Internet Issue Explained
When interacting with networking pieces of equipment, it’s important to keep in mind that things are tied up.
There is no way for your extender to work, if there’s a problem at the starting point – the router.
The extender is simply used to “extend” your WiFi network throughout the house.
Let’s review some common problems that could cut the internet to your D-Link Extender:
- There’s an issue with the Network Router
- Interference with the DNS Setting
- Improper D-Link Extender Settings
- Outdated Network Driver
- Issues with the Extender Setup
Troubleshooting your D-Link Extender will not take you far if the device is having internal software/hardware faults.
Sometimes, an indication for an extender’s end of life is whenever it randomly disconnects or is having chip issues that prevent the device from connecting.

D-Link WiFi Extender Connected But No Internet – Fixed!
After reading more about the problem and the details behind its occurrence, we could now run you through all the troubleshooting steps.
All that’s expected from you, is to try all of our solutions, in chronological order as they are. Skipping notes, tips and alerts won’t do any good!
Let’s jump right in!
Solution #1 Hard Reset the Extender
Although that’s a basic thing to attempt, this is the only method that a large number of users have tried whenever they got the problem for the first time.
The Hard Reset is done by cutting the power supply of the particular electronic device, for a certain amount of time.
As a result of doing that, the device will achieve a full discharge of the hardware in terms of electricity and will refresh its hardware and software.
Here’s how to Hard Reset the extender:
- Press the Power Button on your D-Link Extender (if it has one).
- Wait for 3-5 seconds.
- Unplug the extender from the associated electrical outlet.
- Standby for a total of 5 minutes, while the extender is discharging.
- Re-attach the extender back to the inhabited power outlet.
- Turn the device on.
Keep in mind that disconnecting your extender from the power will collapse the hosted WiFi network. As a result of that, all of your connected devices will be temporarily unpaired.
Alert: It’s of great importance to let the extender unplugged for at least 5 minutes!
Solution #2 Configure the Extender’s Network Settings
In this step, we’ll be heading into the Network Management Page of your D-Link Extender.
From there, we’ll be interacting with the variety of available network settings for your extender, to address potential outages related to the configuration.
For this purpose, you must be connected to the extender’s WiFi network through your PC or laptop and access the page.
Quick Fact: In the box of the extender, there’ll be an info sticker, with the password!
Once you’ve connected to the extender’s WiFi, proceed with the following steps:
- On the connected device, launch a Browser.
- Wait for the Connection Setup Wizard to verify your login.
- (Optional) Type http://dlinkap.local if you weren’t automatically redirected
- (Optional) Press “WPS ” and complete the steps if you haven’t set up your extender yet.
- Navigate to the Network Settings tab.
- DHCP Server – Set the feature to “ON”
- IP Address: Set the value to “10.0.200.X”
- IP Address Pool – Configure the range of the main router – (Optional)
- Address Lease Time – Set the value to “1440”
- IPv4 & Default Gateway – Fill in the info according to your router’s
Alert: Not pressing “Save” at the bottom of the page, will not complete the changes.
Solution #3 Reconnect your WiFi Devices
As you probably know, setting up a WiFi extender will create a separate network, alongside your active WiFi, hosted by the router.
The WiFi hosted by the extender will still be using your router’s connection, but it’ll be the “extended” variant, also hosted by the extender.
Not changing the WiFi of your secondary device, may result in outages, in regard to the router, rather than the extender.
That’s why you must reconnect all of your devices to the extender.
Here’s how to reconnect your WiFi devices in easy steps:
- On the device, you wish to connect, head to Settings.
- Access the WiFi tab.
- Select the router network.
- Press “Disconnect” if you’re connected.
- Locate the WiFi that begins with “D-Link” (hosted by the extender).
- Select the WiFi and type the network key.
- Press “Connect”.
If your extender has been set up successfully, the status beneath the extender’s WiFi in your device’s settings will adjust to “Connected”.
Note: You must be standing somewhat to the extender while performing the connection.
Solution #4 Update the Extender’s Firmware
If for some reason your extender has failed to update automatically, particular network checkups will be failed and as a result, the WiFi will go down.
To get this problem quickly settled, you’ll have to update the extender manually by going into Web Settings.
Here’s how to get the firmware of your extender updated manually:
- Launch a browser on your PC or laptop and connect with the extender.
- In the browser’s search field, type “http://dlinkap.local” and press Enter.
- After that, sign in with the registration info you’ve created during setup.
- Press “Management” at the top-right of the page.
- In the drop-down menu, select “Upgrade”.
- Press “Check for New Firmware” at the top of the page.
- Wait for updates to be found and identified.
In the same “Management” page, you could also select “Upload” at the bottom of the page and select a firmware file on your PC.
All you have to do is get the latest extender firmware downloaded from D-Link’s website onto your PC and upload it there!
Solution #5 Flush the Network DNS
Perhaps, the problem could be with the router’s DNS. When installing an extender different in brand and manufacturer, particular compatibility issues could occur as a result.
Once the DNS of the router is flushed after installing the extender, new network data will be loaded and the connectivity should start running smoothly.
Here’s how to flush the DNS of your Network Router:
- (Important) Connect your PC/Laptop to the router using an Ethernet Cable!
- Click the Start Button.
- Type “CMD”.
- Press the Enter key.
- In the Command Prompt, do “ipconfig /flushdns”.
- Press the Enter key again.
- You should see a message, confirming that the DNS Cache was flushed.
As a result of flushing the DNS, your network could go offline temporarily.
Alert: You may have to undergo a WPS setup with the router/extender once again.
Solution #6 Factory Reset the D-Link Extender
If everything has gone south with your extender, it’s best to revert the factory default settings of the device.
D-Link has included an option to reset the extender by interacting with the hardware (a pinhole), rather than messing with software settings and the web configuration.
- To reset the extender, insert a paperclip into the reset hole for 10 seconds!
Once you’ve plugged the tool into the pinhole and held the button, the extender will start resetting.
As a result of holding the reset button, the LED on the front will turn reset. This is when you have to let go of the reset button since it generally takes about 10 seconds.
Alert: You’ll have to go through the extender’s web setup again, after resetting the device.
Thus, to fix when D-Link WiFi Extender connected but no internet, Hard Reset the device and flush the Network DNS of your router.
After that, upgrade the Firmware Version of the extender, connect your WiFi devices to the extender’s network and reset the device.
