British Gas Usage Not Working – Fix Error in 8 Quick Steps
Fortunately, this is not an issue with complicated solutions. There are several quick and easy steps to follow that will help you restore your app usage data.
#1: Refresh Your Internet Connection with a Power Cycle
If your British Gas usage app not working, it’s likely there’s an issue with your internet connection.
This is one of the simplest and most effective methods to fix this, as this will restore the connection of your smart meter and app to the internet.
Here are the steps to refresh your internet connection:
- Turn off your router by unplugging it from the power source.
- Switch off your device and smart meter.
- Wait for about 30 seconds to a minute.
- Turn on your router by plugging it back in.
- Wait for it to connect or until the lights are stable.
- Switch on your device and smart meter.
- Open the British Gas app and check if you have a usage reading.
Note: If your connection uses a modem and router, make sure that you cycle them both to flush out any issues.
#2: Force Close the British Gas App on Your Device
Your British Gas app is your go-to place to check your current usage. If this does not work due to a glitch, it will freeze, or the data is corrupted and won’t show your reading.
To fix this, you want to force close the app on your device to refresh it.
Here’s how to do it:
For iPhone users:
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the app switcher.
- Find the open British Gas app by swiping left and right.
- Swipe up on the app’s preview card to close it.
For Android users:
- Tap on the recent apps button at the bottom to open the app switcher.
- Navigate to the British Gas app preview card.
- Swipe up on the preview to close it.
Note: After force-closing the app, you’ll need to relaunch it to check if the usage data is going to be displayed.
If this step does not resolve the issue, you’re likely dealing with a server issue on the British Gas side. You want to proceed to the steps below.
#3: Check the Server Status
A server-side issue like maintenance, crash, or high demand will affect the British Gas app’s ability to update your usage data.
When this happens, you won’t be able to see it until they sort it out on their end.
You’ll want to confirm that there is an issue on their side, and here’s how you do it:
- Visit a service status website such as DownDetector.
- Type British Gas in the search bar and select the Find button.
- Check the results to see if their server is down or not.
- If it is, contact British Gas Support to know when the service will be restored.
Tip: Checking their social media accounts will also let you know if there are outages or maintenance activities in your area.
#4: Switch to an Alternate Internet Connection Like Mobile Data
There are also cases where there’s a problem with your internet connection, and you won’t be able to check your usage.
If this is the case, you want to test out a different connection method and bypass any problems with your network.
Here’s how to do this:
- Disconnect from WiFi on the device that you’re using.
- Turn on the Mobile Data option on your phone.
- Once connected, open the British Gas app and check if your usage is updated.
- If it works, continue using your Mobile Data until your WiFi service is restored.
Tip: This step also goes the other way, so if you have a problem with your Mobile Data, connect to a WiFi network and see if you are able to see your usage data.
#5: Check Your Usage on the Website App
If your British Gas usage not working on your mobile app, you’ll need to try checking your usage by logging into your account on the website.
It’s going to be a web-based version of their app, allowing you to access it on any browser.
- Open the British Gas website on your browser.
- Click on the Log in button on the top right.
- Type your email address, then press Continue.
- Enter your password.
- Once logged in, go to the Energy Overview tab.
- Select the Current Usage tab to know your usage.
Note: The web app is going to be familiar as it will have the same features and functions as the mobile app.
#6: Clear Your Browser Cache and Cookies
Your browser should give you access to your British Gas usage. However, it’s not always the case, and you might encounter some issues if the cache and cookies are full or corrupted.
This will affect how websites load and mess up with how some of the data is displayed.
When this happens, you want to clear your browser cache, data, and cookies so they won’t interfere with the website’s performance.
Here’s how you do it:
For Chrome users:
- Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
- Select More Tools.
- Click the Clear Browsing Data option.
- In the Clear Browsing Data window, choose Cached Images and Files.
- Click the Clear Data button.
For Firefox users:
- Click the three-line menu in the top right corner.
- Click on Settings.
- Select the Privacy and Security tab.
- Scroll down to Cookies and Site Data.
- Click on Clear Data.
- Check Cookies and Site Data.
- Check the Cached Web Content box.
- Click the Clear button.
Note: After clearing your website cache, you want to restart your browser to allow the new settings to load before checking your British Gas usage.
#7: Remove Unnecessary Files on the British Gas App
It’s not just the website version of British Gas that has this problem. Even if you’re using the app, it will encounter issues when there’s too much temporary and unnecessary data stored on your device.
You want to clear this and free up your device’s storage to improve your app’s connectivity and performance. To do this, follow these steps:
For iPhone users:
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to General.
- Select the iPhone Storage option.
- Scroll down and find the British Gas app.
- Tap on the Offload App button.
- Tap on Offload again to confirm.
For Android users:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Apps or Applications.
- Scroll down and find the British Gas app.
- Tap on the British Gas app.
- Select Storage.
- Tap the Clear Cache option.
- Tap on Clear Data.
Note: Performing these steps will remove all temporary data and settings stored on the app, but it will not delete your account info.
#8: Verify Your Account Settings to Match Your Setup
One reason why your British Gas usage is not working is due to a mismatch between your account settings and your setup at home.
