How to Fix When Linksys Velop Child Node Not Connecting?

1. Reconnect the Unpaired Child Nodes
The first step to creating a successful mesh network is to add each of the nodes into the mesh configuration of the Linksys router.
Each Linksys router hosts its own wireless or wired network that can adopt child nodes to expand the coverage of the Wi-Fi at each end of your household.
How to Reconnect Velop Child Node Wirelessly?
- First, open the Linksys app on your mobile device.
- Tap “Add Another Node” to “xxxx” (network name.)
- Press “To Extend my Wi-Fi with a new child node.”
- Activate the Bluetooth feature if prompted by the app.
- Verify that the child node is powered on and install it.
How to Reconnect Velop Child Node via Ethernet?
- Position the Velop child node close to the Velop router.
- Install the Ethernet cable onto the back of your router.
- Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable in the node.
- Open the Linksys app and tap on “Add Another Node.”
- Complete the setup according to the wired setup steps.
All Velop child nodes utilize Bluetooth connection to establish a connection to the router or the prior node in the “star” network type.
So, the requirement for a wired connection is to set up the nodes closer to each other, based on the cable’s length, to connect them tightly and securely!
2. Inspect the Power Supply of the Node
If one or more particular nodes keep losing connection to the Linksys router, there may be a fault with the power supply.
A loose connection of the adapter or a malfunctioning electrical outlet can result in an onset of issues with the child nodes and cause them to lose connection.
How to Verify the Power Connection of Velop Child Nodes?
- Check if the A/C cable of the node is connected securely.
- Test the electrical outlet by connecting another appliance.
- Inspect the physical condition of the adapter for damages.
- Connect the power adapter of the node to another socket.

Bonus Tip: Power Cycle the Child Node
Another effective method to address power issues with the child nodes is to perform a power cycle.
A power circulation of the system is achieved by interrupting the electrical supply of the node until the unit has discharged completely.
To power cycle, a Linksys Velop child node, unplug the power cable from both ends for 60 seconds.
Once the 60 seconds have passed, reconnect the power cable to the power supply.

3. Reconnect the Parental Unit’s Service
If the Linksys router fails to establish network coverage, none of the Velop child units will be able to establish a connection to the mesh.
Hence, the next step is to re-initialize the service connection of the router and attempt to re-add each Velop node individually.
Here’s how to reconnect the parental Linksys unit from service:
- Disconnect the Coaxial cable from the back of the parental unit.
- Unplug the other end of the cable from the master coaxial outlet.
- Next, wait for 30 seconds while the parental unit is disconnected.
- Reattach the coaxial cable of the parental unit into the service port.
- Reconnect the other end of the cable into the master coaxial outlet.
Tip: Inspect the physical condition of the coaxial cable before reconnecting it to service!
4. Reposition the Mesh Nodes (Wireless)
As established earlier, the Linksys Velop child nodes can connect wirelessly to the router or via Ethernet.
In a wireless setup, a particular distance requirement must be met to stabilize the connection and prevent the child nodes from losing their bond with the router.
In a Linksys wireless setup environment, the distance between each connected child node and the router must be between 30 and 50 feet, based on the thread of the Wi-Fi.
Since the Velop mesh supports dual-band connectivity, the connection can be in 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency.
What is the Recommended Distance for Velop 2.4GHz/5GHz?
Here’s the main difference between the frequency of your Linksys Velop setup:
- With nodes distributing a 2.4GHz connection, the estimated distance is up to 130 feet due to the signal being more lightweight and easy to travel through obstructions.
- With nodes distributing a 5 GHz connection, the estimated distance is up to 50 feet, as the signal is heavier, contains more data, and has difficulty traveling through walls.
Note: If your Linksys Velop nodes are constantly disconnected, switch from the 2.4 GHz to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequency.
5. Reset the Parental Unit & Child Nodes
You can address lasting Linksys connectivity errors on both the parental unit and child nodes by forcing a factory reset on the system.

Ethernet Not Connecting to Child Node With Linksys Velop?
A wired connection is the alternative option for connecting a Linksys Velop child node to the parent unit.
Although wireless pairing is the preference, setting up the nodes via Ethernet link provides a more reliable and faster transfer of data, thus, higher connection speeds.
Here are some of the most reliable tips to restore Velop’s Ethernet connectivity!
Reseat the Ethernet Cable
Perhaps the issue is caused by a loose or unsecured service connection between the Velop parental unit and the network modem.
This could result in lasting connection throttles and prevent the child nodes from establishing a connection with the mesh network.
So, unplug the Ethernet cable from both ends, wait for 15 seconds, and secure it back onto the ports on the parental and child Velop nodes.
Verify that the switch of the cable has clicked in.
Install in a Different Ethernet Port
The Linksys Velop child nodes and the routers have two ultra-fast gigabit Ethernet ports, allowing for third-party connections and one signal coaxial (master) socket.
In case of a failure or malfunction of one of the Ethernet ports on the nodes, you can always use the second one.
Hence, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the child node and plug it into the secondary port to test the connection.
