This is the only way to find the culprit, using the method of exclusion so without further ado let’s jump right in!
Solution #1 Use the Power Button Trick!

Simply press the Power Button multiple times! This is the so-called “Power Button Trick” in the receiver’s world.
By pressing the power button of your DirecTV receiver more than once, you’ll achieve a discharge of the device’s hardware components, which might be enough to turn on the box!
Note: Stop pressing the power button of the receiver once the device starts!
Solution #2 Power Cycle the DirecTV Receiver
Next, we’ll be performing a Power Cycle on your DirecTV Receiver to reset the power equipment.
This is another effective solution, used by great numbers of users to settle problems with their receivers and any other electrical devices in general.
- The Power Cycle requires unplugging the device from the power!
Follow these instructions to perform a Power Cycle on the DirecTV Receiver:
- Press the Power Button on the receiver once to shut it down.
- Wait for at least 10 seconds!
- Unplug the Power Cable of the receiver from the Electrical Outlet.
- Wait for a full 3 minutes until the cable box is unplugged.
- Re-attach the adapter of the cable box back into the outlet.
Once the cable box is re-attached to the power source, press the power button to attempt to turn it on. If the receiver is functional now, it should start after a few moments.
Note: While the box is unplugged, carefully examine the buttons and make sure they aren’t stuck or damaged.
Solution #3 Flip the Outlet’ Switch
There’s a probability that the outlets in your house have a switch or you’re using a smart plug that could’ve turned off by itself.
If you have a switch to your outlets, the button must be pressed towards “ON” in order for power to be delivered to the outlet.
Otherwise, the connected DirecTV Receiver will not acquire any charge and will therefore remain functional. So, examine your receiver’s outlet and press the switch towards “ON”.
If using a smart plug, it’s best to disconnect the plug and connect the receiver’s power cable directly to the power source.
This’ll ensure that the receiver will have power at all times, no matter what happens to the third-party devices in the setup.
Note: Keep any third-party devices out of the setup until the issue is identified.
Solution #4 Reconnect ALL Cables!
It’s important to understand that the receiver might be turning ON but you might not be able to see anything on the screen because the cables are faulty.
You’ve got two general cable connections that you need to inspect – the power cable and the video cable!
Video Cable:
In most cases the video cable is an HDMI on both ends, so check whether it’s plugged into the box and into the TV.
In addition don’t forget to check whether the TV is configured to the correct HDMI source, in order to see the content from your DirecTV received on screen!
Power Cable:
The power cable consists of a cable (power port) and an adapter (outlet plug) on the other end.
This is the most important connection that you need to inspect and whether it’s firmly connected to the power input of your DirecTV receiver.
Tip: Make sure that the cables are connected all the way in!
Solution #5 Push the DirecTV Box’s Red Button
If your DirecTV Receiver won’t turn on even after thoroughly inspecting the power supply, the problem could be resolved by pushing the box’s “Red Button”.
By pressing the Red button, you’ll make your DirecTV receiver undergo a Reset and it’s recommended to be used only in case of emergency.
If you weren’t able to get your DirecTV receiver started until now, then you should press the Red Reset Button at once.
- The Red Button on your DirecTV Box is either on the back or front!
As the button’s name suggests, it is in red color, and holding it down for 15 seconds will trigger the reset on your DirecTV box.
If the pressing of the button has been detected successfully, your DirecTV box’s LED should blink rapidly as a result.
Note: Wait for at least 60 seconds to determine if the reset has started or not!
Solution #6 Connect to Box to a Different Outlet
If your DirecTV box no longer starts after a power outage, it could have something to do with the Electrical Outlet to which the device is connected.
For this solution, we strongly suggest getting your DirecTV Receiver box plugged into another power outlet in your home!
- You don’t have to move all of the equipment, only the box, and the adapter!
Grab only the power adapter and reinstall it into the receiver once you’ve placed the device into its new position.
You’ll know if the cable box works now if its LED lights up when you plug it into the electrical outlet.
Alert: If the previous outlet is faulty, avoid using it until you contact a technician!
Solution #7 Replace the Box’s Power Equipment
If nothing worked so far, then we would strongly suggest getting a new power cord for the DirecTV Receiver.
In most cases, it would be the power cord that has gone faulty, rather than the whole receiver and its internal components, so it’s worth purchasing a new cable!
We strongly recommend getting the DirecTV H25 Power Supply Replacement at an approachable price to use for your DirecTV Receiver.
Some models even come with a warranty so it won’t be anytime soon that you’ll be replacing this cable.
Note: Purchasing a new cord could also be done from DirecTV’s official website.
Solution #8 Claim The Warranty!
Your receiver won’t turn on no matter what you attempt? Well, check your warranty!
If your warranty is still intact, now is the best moment to contact DirecTV Customer Service and report the problem you’re experiencing.
With a bit of luck, you’ll receive a replacement in case the current receiver is faulty or impacted by a power surge.
Tip: Don’t forget to share the methods you’ve attempted in this guide!
