When you receive a red light on your extender we always assume the worst but in most cases, the problem is really simple.
The red flashing light on your extender means that the D-Link device has failed to connect with the network device.
This problem itself could be caused by the following things:
- Problem with the Network Device (Router/Modem)
- A Wireless Signal Interference (Router > Extender)
- Fault in the D-Link Extender’s Firmware (OS)
- The Extender is Too Far Away from the Router
- The Wireless Pairing Setup has Failed
When setting up your D-Link Extender, you must be conscious of the settings you adjust to the device.
Doing a random password for instance, or adjusting DNS settings you’re not aware of, will prevent the router from pairing with the extender. However, we’re here to help!

Solution #1 Reconnect the WiFi Extender
Chances are that the red light that occurs on your extender is a one-time problem and simply carrying out the pairing setup is all you need to do.
You’ll have to reconnect to your network’s router and wait for the LEDs of the device to turn solid green, rather than flashing red.
Follow these steps to reconnect your D-Link DAP 1620 Extender to the router:
- Make sure that your extender is plugged in.
- Locate the WPS Button on the front panel of the device.
- Press and hold the WPS button for 3 seconds.
- In the next 60 seconds, press the WPS button on your router.
- Hold the router’s WPS for 5 seconds.
- Wait for the router to detect the wireless signal of the extender.
- Check the LEDs of the extender.
D-Link Dap 1620 LED Patterns:
- Flashing Yellow – The extender is connecting
- Flashing Red – The extender has disconnected
- Solid Green – The Extender is connected
Note: If the D-Link extender’s LED remains red, it fails to connect with the router!
Solution #2 Hard Reset your Network Device
Reconnecting your WiFi extender single-handedly could not be the problem in your situation!
It’s possible that the WiFi router/modem in your network setup has developed certain faults and you’ll have to refresh the device.
- To power cycle/hard reset a device, it must be discharged from all electricity!
Follow these instructions to perform a Hard Reset on your Network Device in easy steps:
- Locate the Power Button on the panels of your router/modem.
- Press and hold the button until the device Shuts down.
- Once the router has turned off, unplug it from the power.
- Wait for 60 seconds until the network device is discharging.
- Reconnect the power cable of the device back into an outlet.

Another effective way to discharge your network device, without unplugging it, is if your electrical outlet has a switch.
Flip the switch on your power strip and wait for 60 seconds, without disconnecting your network device’s power cable.
Alert: It’s recommended to wait long enough for your router to feel cold on touch!
Solution #3 Close The Wireless Proximity!
If the DAP D-Link extender keeps flashing in red, even after reconnecting it in the previous step, this problem is probably distance-related.
Placing the extender too close to the router will ruin the extender’s abilities, but plugging it far away will interrupt the reaching signal.
You must find a location in your home that is not too close but also not too far away from the router at the same time.
That would be the perfect spot for your D-Link extender!
- Locate an outlet not farther than 10 meters from the router.
- Unplug the D-Link Extender from the occupied electrical outlet.
- Be careful not to press any buttons on the extender.
- Plug the extender into the new electrical outlet.
- Wait for the front green LEDs to blink multiple times.
- Check if the connection status is going to appear.
If the extender has succeeded to connect, the 3 LEDs on the front of the extender will turn solid green, to indicate the signal strength.
If 3 out of 3 LEDs are in solid green, it means the signal is strong and reliable, hence the problem should be solved.
Note: The farther you place your extender, the fewer LEDs will be lit in green!
Solution #4 Upload a New Network Driver
In this solution, we’ll be uploading the newest functionality network driver, available for your D-Link 1620 extender.
Your device must be kept updated, in order to maintain all of its functionalities and compatibility is not something that we can skip.
- Updating the extender could be done from the web settings of D-Link!
Follow these steps to get the latest network driver uploaded to your D-Link:
- Open an Online Web Browser on your device.
- Go to http://dlinkap.local” and press Enter.
- Enter your Admin Password and Username (by default both are “admin”).
- Tap “Log In”.
- Go to “Automatic Upgrade”.
- Tap on “Check for New Firmware”.
- Wait for the checker to finish detecting the newest driver.
- Tap on “Update”.
If an update has started on your D-Link DAP 1620 extender, it’ll take the device around 3 – 5 minutes to upload the latest driver.
Make sure to not interact/disconnect the device from the power or you may prevent the driver from uploading and installing.
Note: Once your extender has finished updating, it’ll reboot and start working!
Solution #5 Enable Smart Connect on your Router!
Although your D-Link DAP 1620 is compatible with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, there’s a feature of your router you could answer some questions.
The “Smart Connect” also known as “Smart WiFi”, will merge your router’s WiFi threads and enable any device to connect.
- Smart Connect allows devices to use their maximum WiFi capabilities!
It’s a feature you could only gain access to through your router’s mobile application or the control panel so follow these steps to locate and enable Smart Connect:
- Launch an Online Browser on your computer.
- Find and Copy the Default Gateway by typing “ipconfig” in the CMD.
- Paste the gateway IP of your network into the browser’s search field.
- On the following page, use “admin” for both username and password.
- Once signed in to your network, go to “Network”.
- Tap on “Advanced”.
- Search for a “Smart Connect” or “Smart WiFI” feature.
- (Optional) If the extender is still blinking, reconnect it via Solution #1.
Get your extender connected to the now merged WiFi and check if the red LED would still blinks. You should also keep in mind that your paired devices will disconnect from WiFi.
Note: Keep your extender powered on while reconnecting it to the router!
Solution #6 Factory Reset the Extender
If nothing worked so far, you should perform a Factory Reset on the D-Link DAP 1620 extender.
It is the quickest way to address functionality and connectivity issues with the device that are preventing your device from pairing and therefore, start freshly!
- For the factory reset, you’ll need a paperclip or another sharp object!
Here’s how to reset your D-Link Extender:
- Find the reset pinhole on the back of the extender.
- Insert the paperclip into the hole.
- Hold the reset button for 10 seconds.
- Wait for the LED to turn solid red.
- Release the button.

The reset usually takes between 60 and 120 seconds so be patient and allow your D-Link extender to restore to the factory settings.
Then, using Solution #1, you’ll be able to reconnect the extender to the WiFi and finally, start utilizing the device without any of the signal issues!
