Are you having trouble with your British Gas Live Energy not working?
It monitors your energy usage and bills in real-time. If it’s not working, the likely cause is your internet connection or an issue with your smart meter’s battery or status.
To fix your British Gas Live Energy, you want to check the server status and make sure that there’s no outage or maintenance. You also want to look at the condition of your smart meter.
Let’s figure out how you do it.
British Gas Live Energy Not Working – 10 Proven Solutions
If your British Gas My Energy Live app is not working, there are different ways to fix it. We’ve arranged them from easiest to more complex ones, so you’ll be able to attempt them in order.
Let’s get to the solutions:
#1: Check the Server Status of the British Gas App
One of the first things you need to do if your British Gas app is not working properly is to make sure the server is up.
There are instances when the app is down or undergoing maintenance, affecting its functionality and performance.
To check the status of the British Gas app and servers, here’s what you need to do:
- Go to the British Gas website and look for any announcements or alerts.
- Follow their social media accounts to know if their servers are up or down.
- Contact British Gas Support and ask if there’s an issue with their app.
Tip: If the app or servers are down or undergoing maintenance, you’ll have to wait until it’s back online before using it.
#2: Refresh Your Connection to the Internet
Since your British Gas app and smart meter need an internet connection to work, you want to refresh it.
This helps resolve any network issues that interfere with how the app works and communicates with the servers.
To refresh your connection, here’s what you need to do:
- Switch off your router, modem, and device.
- Unplug your router and modem from their power source.
- Wait between 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
- Plug them back in and turn them on.
- Wait for them to reconnect to the internet before connecting your device.
Note: If this doesn’t work, you want to connect to an alternative internet connection, such as mobile data, to see if the app works.
If this method works, there’s nothing wrong with your device or network.
However, if you continue to run into issues with the Live Energy app, proceed to more advanced solutions below.
#3: Replace the Batteries of Your Smart Meter
If the batteries on your smart meter are low or dead, it will prevent it from sending and receiving data to British Gas and, ultimately, the app.
Here’s how to replace the batteries on your smart meter:
- Contact British Gas support by phone, chat, or email.
- Let them know that the batteries in your smart meter are malfunctioning.
- Schedule a time for their technician to come and replace the batteries.
Note: The replacement process usually takes around 15 minutes, so it shouldn’t take too much of your time.
It’s possible to change the batteries yourself, although we don’t really recommend it.
#4: Make Sure Your Account Comes with a Smart Meter
One of the main requirements of using the Live Energy feature on your account is that it needs to have a smart meter.
If you don’t have one, you won’t be able to use the feature. So, you want to make sure your account comes with a smart meter.
Here’s how to do it:
- Log in to your British Gas account.
- Go to the My Energy section.
- Navigate to Smart Meter.
- If it says No, request one by clicking Book Now.
If your account is already equipped with a smart meter, and you’re still unable to use the Live Energy feature, we recommend you proceed to other solutions below.
#5: Confirm Your Smart Meter is Registered to Your Account
Another requirement for you to use the Live Energy feature is to make sure that your smart meter is registered to your account. This means that it needs to be linked for you to use the features.
Here’s how you do it:
- Log in to your British Gas account.
- Go to the My Energy section.
- Look for the Smart Meter option and check the registration status.
- It should say Registered.
- If it says Not Registered, click on the Register Now button.
Tip: If it says Registered, move on to the next solution, as you’re likely dealing with an app rather than an account issue.
#6: Force Close the British Gas Live Energy App

You want to update your account accordingly to keep it up to date.
Here’s how to do it:
- Log in to your British Gas account.

- Check if there are any alerts or notifications about your account.
- If there are any alerts, update them accordingly.
- If not, check your account details manually.

- Select Save.
Note: Don’t forget to check if you have any outstanding balances and change your payment method to ensure you pay them promptly.
#9: Confirm the App Has the Necessary Permissions
If your app does not have the necessary permission to access your data, it will not work as intended. You want to make sure that your app gets the necessary permissions from your phone.
To confirm it, follow these steps:
On iPhone:
- Go to your phone’s Settings.
- Tap on the Privacy option.
- Find and tap the permissions you want to check.
- Select the British Gas Live Energy app.
- Set the permission setting to “While Using the App”.
On Android:

- Find the British Gas Live Energy app from the list.
- Tap on Permissions.
- Set them to Allow.
#10: Reset Your Smart Meter
If none of these solutions work and you continue to experience this issue with your British Gas Live Energy, you need to reset your smart meter.
Here’s how to do it:
- Find your smart meter and locate the reset button.
- Press and hold it for around 10 seconds.
- Wait until you see a message on the screen.
- Release the button and wait for a few minutes.
- Reconnect your smart meter to your app.
Note: Resetting your smart meter will delete your energy usage history and preferences, so you will have to back them up.
