Telstra Internet Moving House – Complete Steps

1. Check the New Address
The first step is the quickest but most important one.
You need to identify the service availability of your new address and whether the same installation as your current one will work on the site.
This is crucial because you may need to switch technology types, get a brand-new installation or cope with an existing one.
This is where additional fees come from, and you can immediately check the availability of the new address by visiting the official Telstra Moving House webpage.
To check your address, scroll down Telstra’s moving house page and insert the full address into the provided field.
Click on the magnifying glass to search, and in a couple of seconds, you will see the type of nbn technology available at the provided address.
Note: If you see “That’s Great,” service is available at the new site, meaning no installation will be required (maybe switching plans only).
2. Learn the Possible Fees
Upon checking your address, you would know if the new site is available for nbn technology and more specifically, which type.
If the available service differs from the one you currently use, you will have to switch plans, but you won’t have any bold fees concerning a new nbn integration.
Switching Telstra Plans:
If your new address is equipped with an nbn device, even if the technology differs from the one you currently use, you may only need to switch Telstra plans.
This is not expensive; there are no taxes, but you must pay the first month of your new subscription, which is the only payment.
Note: The speed of your internet will be the maximum that the technology and plan allow, so it may differ from the speed you’ve got.
New Development Charge:
This is the scariest fee of all.
The new development charge only applies when your new address has been recently built, subdivided, or renovated, or there is no nbn installation on the premises.
The New Development Charge is a one-time payment of $300, requiring a technician site visit.
Note: A new development may take more than 2 business days!
3. Book Your Moving Date
After checking your new address, you can click the “Move my Telstra internet now” button further down the Telstra moving house page.
When you click the button, you will be asked whether you need Priority Assistance or simply want to continue your internet moving.
Priority Assistance?
If you or someone in the family has a life-threatening condition and requires a phone connection in an emergency, click “I need Priority Assistance.”
This way, downtime regarding not having a phone can be minimised or discussed to fulfil the customer’s needs.
If you don’t require priority assistance, click “No, continue with order,” sign in to your account when prompted and book your moving.
You must provide the exact address, exact date and additional details you’re concerned about.

4. Prepare Your Equipment
When moving, knowing what equipment comes with you and what stays at the old premises is essential.
For the Telstra internet moving procedure, you only need to bring your modem since Telstra does not provide new modems for the move.
The only exception is if the modem is incompatible with the new nbn installation, in which case you’ll receive a compatible device.
Based on your current contract, you may have to return the current modem to receive the new one, so either way, you must take the current unit with you.
Don’t Take the nbn or Opticomm!
The already installed and set up nbn connection box or Opticomm device stays on the premises even when you move out.
You must leave the device behind without disconnecting any wiring, equipment or installation components.
5. Connect Your Modem (Self-Install)
If your new premises are equipped with the same nbn technology as the current one, you can request a self-installation, which only requires connecting your modem.
So, what you should have brought from your old address is the modem and the cable connecting with the nbn box.
At the new site, you should have the same nbn box (in terms of functionality), which means that you only need to connect your modem.
Here’s how:
For Fibre to the Premises (FTTP):
- Plug the Ethernet cable into the “WAN” router port.
- Plug the other end into the “Uni-D1” nbn box’s port.
For Fibre to the Curb (FTTC):
- Plug the Ethernet wire into the “WAN” modem port.
- Connect the other end to the “Gateway” nbn port.
For Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC):
- Connect the Ethernet cable to the “WAN” modem port.
- Plug the other Ethernet end into the nbn “Uni-D1” port.
Those are the connections you must establish yourself and verify that the nbn connection box is working.
When ready, you can test if your internet connection is working at the new address.

How Much Notice Should I Give to Telstra?
So, the notice about moving that you should provide Telstra with depends on the installation option that you’ve selected upon booking.
This primarily depends on what’s available in the new address regarding the existing installation and whether you need a technician visit.
If you’re switching plans, installing a new service, or a Telstra technician visiting the new site is necessary, you must provide a more prominent notice.
- If you’ve chosen the self-installation option, give Telstra 2 business days notice.
- If you require a technician visit, you should notify Telstra 7 days before moving.

When Do I Need a Telstra Technician Visit?
