Wondering why the Peloton tread keeps shutting off? Well, you’re not alone, so keep reading!
A treadmill shut-down does not only interrupt your workout but could also represent a possibility for an injury, especially if you’re treading at high speeds.
So, in this short guide, we will secure the treadmill’s functionality by reviewing all possible factors causing the unexpected shutdowns!
If the Peloton tread is periodically shutting off during a workout, verify that the safety switch is not disconnected and reseat the power cord on both ends. Next, examine the tread for potential defects and prompt the system to factory reset.
Let’s investigate more about the issue with the Peloton tread!
Why Does the Peloton Tread Keeps Stopping?
Let’s identify all of the possibilities causing the Peloton treadmill to shut down randomly:
Those were the reasons preventing the Peloton tread from working optimally.
Let’s investigate the parameters of the Peloton treadmill to verify that the power supply meets the requirements!
Peloton Tread Power Requirements!
To verify that the Peloton tread is receiving sufficient power supply from the associated electrical outlet, it is advised to review the recommended power requirements.
Hence, to determine if the Peloton tread’s power supply fluctuates, let’s review the estimated volt and amps requirements!
The power supply of the Peloton tread must meet the following statistics:
- 120 V of minimum voltage.
- 15 amps dedicated circuit.
- 60 Hz suggested frequency.
Those are the most minor power requirements the power source of the Peloton treadmill must meet.
Check the user manual to identify whether the treadmill outlet meets these parameters!
Peloton Tread Keeps Shutting OFF – Proven Ways to Fix!
Tip: Follow the steps in a consecutive order!
1. Reconnect the Tread Safety Key
All treadmills have a safety key that deactivates the running track when disconnected from the slot and turns off the power supply to the Peloton device.
The safety key is also used to reset the power supply of the Peloton tread, and reconnecting it should fix the shutting-off problem.
- Find the red safety key on the monitor mount of the Peloton tread and disconnect it from the port for 15-20 seconds.
If the safety key was previously unplugged, you must reconnect it with the mount to activate the track of the Peloton tread.
Remember that the treadmill won’t work without inserting the key!
Why is the Safety Key Not Connecting?
If the safety key doesn’t magnetize with the connector, verify no obstructions on the port.
Collect the dust accumulation on the surface of the safety key and the safety connector on the monitor mount of the Peloton treadmill.
Note: Verify that the safety key establishes proper contact with the connector.
2. Power Reset the Peloton Tread!
There could be an underlying issue with the power supply of the Peloton tread, causing the fitness appliance to shut down frequently.
A fluctuation in the power supply may deactivate the running track or cause an injury to the user if the mechanism momentum is ceased suddenly.
Follow these steps to reset the power supply of the Peloton tread in easy steps:
- Locate the power switch on the underside of the Peloton tread.
- Start with disconnecting the power cable from the Peloton tread.
- Unplug the other end of the power adapter from the A/C source.
- Next, wait for 60 seconds while the power cable is disconnected.
- Reseat the power cord on both ends to restore the tread’s power.
- Wait for the treadmill to turn on and test the system’s functionality.
The treadmill must run for at least 1-2 minutes to determine if the hardware is shutting down due to issues with the power supply or elevated hardware temperature.
So, select the training regime on the treadmill display and test it for a while.
Note: You don’t have to mount the treadmill to test the device’s functionality!
3. Stop Peloton Regime Workouts!
If you’ve accidentally activated a regime workout, the treadmill’s running track might be stopping for you to take a break.
For consistent activity on the running track, you must set the treadmill to “Free Mode,” control the speed, and include the track however you like.
Peloton workout regimes often include a pre-designed incline setting of the running track and constantly changing the tread speed for optimal fitness sessions.
If you do not wish to engage in particular fat loss, cardio, or sprint intervals designed by Peloton, use “Quick Start.”
How to Reduce the Tread’s Incline Setting?
Constantly high incline settings during a workout could reduce overheating on the treadmill.
If you’re on “Quick Start”, use the arrow buttons on the display to reduce the incline setting to about 3.5-4% for an optimal workout.
The maximum inline setting on Peloton reaches 12.5%!
Note: The “Quick Start” feature activates the running track, starting at 0.1 speed and inclining!
4. Uninstall Third-Party Equipment
Externally connected devices can reroute the power supply of the Peloton tread and cause a significant fluctuation in the tread’s power port.
Hence, the next step is to plug the power cable of the Peloton treadmill directly into the electrical outlet without any externally installed devices.
Remove the following third-party devices from the treadmill’ setup:
- Outlet connectors or plug-ins.
- Power cord wiring extenders.
- Electrical strips/power dividers.
- Smart plugs in your A/C outlet.
Reroute the power cord of the Peloton treadmill and connect it securely to an electrical outlet.
After that, turn on the tread and determine if the device will continue to shut down suddenly…
Tip: Seek assistance from a professional technician if the electrical outlet isn’t emitting power!
5. Plug the Tread into a Different Outlet!
Perhaps the electrical outlet of the Peloton tread does not cover the optimal requirements for the tread.
Hence, the next step is to connect the treadmill to a different 220V electrical outlet and verify that the power flow is consistent and reliable.
If required, relocate the treadmill next to a power socket in another room and verify that the new outlet is not linked to the old one.
If both outlets are installed with the same A/C fuse from your primary circuit, there could be a malfunction with both outlets.
How to Test an Electrical Outlet?
To determine if the previous electrical outlet of the treadmill isn’t functioning correctly, you can simply plug in your mobile device’s charger and connect your phone to the port.
To check for any fluctuations in the voltage, plug a lamp and observe whether the light is weak or flickering.
Warning: Do not use GFCI outlets to connect the power adapter of the Peloton treadmill!
6. Remove Obstructions from the Track!
If the tread isn’t powering off due to underlying issues with the power supply, then there could be an obstruction in the running track, preventing the rotational momentum.
- For example, dust accumulation could be responsible for the improper moment of the running track, making the tread stop.
So, examine the side openings of the running track and use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the dust accumulation.
Even the smallest object could jam the treadmill’s running track and eventually cause the device to shut down to preserve the hardware in optimal condition.
Alert: Self-inflicted damage to the treadmill is not covered by the Peloton warranty!
7. Wipe the OS of the Peloton Tread
All Peloton devices share the same OS, so completing a system wipe on your Peloton treadmill or bike could be identical.
The factory reset will erase all configured settings on your Peloton treadmill, running schedules, and incline adjustments configured on the system by the user.
Note: The Peloton tread must be initially set up after the OS wipe process!
Follow these steps to factory reset the system of the Peloton treadmill:
- Log into your Peloton account on the treadmill.
- Touch the three dots icon at the bottom right.
- Navigate to “SETTINGS” > “Device Settings.”
- Select the “Personal – Backup & Reset” option.
- Select “Factory Data Reset” from the options.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete.
After prompting the Peloton treadmill to complete a factory reset, the device will be inactive for several minutes.
Do not unplug the power adapter of the tread, or this might cancel the reset.
Note: After the reset, you must sign into your Peloton account again!
Quick Recap:
Thus, to fix whenever the Peloton tread keeps shutting off, power cycle the hardware by disconnecting the electrical cord and reconnecting the safety key.
If the issue persists, check for an obstruction in the running track and perform a factory reset on the treadmill.
