1. Wait Out the “Maintenance Band”
The numbered delay can occur on all three Nest thermostat models and signalizes a cooldown period for the system.
As established, the delay can be called “Maintenance Band,” “deadband,” “differential,” or even “temperature swing” for the time being that the timer remains on-screen.
The timer on the display of the Nest thermostat shows how long the maintenance band lasts and when you will be able to activate your manual or automatic temperature schedule.
Hence, the first step is to wait until the timer reaches “0” and attempt to reactivate the cooling/heating of the thermostat through “Quick View” or the Nest mobile app.
Note: The delay timer often appears as “3” minutes but can also remain for “5” minutes!
2. Adjust the Nest Temperature Manually
Another method to evade the Nest delay is to adjust the heating/cooling temperature manually through the Nest/Google Home app and not rely on “Auto-Schedule.”
The maintenance band often occurs during automatic temperature adjustments, so it is possible to avoid it.
How to Adjust Temperature Manually In the Nest App?
- Open the Nest app and select your thermostat from the homepage.
- Check the current setting of your Nest device and tap the slider.
- Set the temperature of the Nest to “Heat,” “Cool,” or “Heat • Cool.”
- Tap and drag the dial clockwise/counterclockwise to adjust further.
- Once done with the temperature arrangements, tap “Save” below.
- Exit the menu of your Nest and wait for temperature corrections.
How to Adjust Temperature Manually In the Home App?
- Open the Google Home platform on your mobile device.
- Tap the “Favorites” or the “Devices” tab from the menu.
- Select your Nest thermostat from the available options.
- Choose the temperature icon to bring up the Nest menu.
- Select “Heat,” “Cool,” or “Heat • Cool” from the settings.
- Tap “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page and exit.

Only the Nest Learning and the Nest model “E” thermostats are compatible with the Nest mobile application.
If you’re using a standard Nest thermostat, deactivate “Auto-Schedule” through the Google Home app at “Devices” > “Temperature Preferences” > “Auto-Schedule.”
Bonus Tip: Stop Adjusting the Temperature
If you’ve recently had to change the heating or cooling temperature of the system multiple times, you must give the system a couple of minutes to stabilize.
- The delay’s sole purpose is to preserve the system and decrease the wear on the utilized components as much as possible.
Hence, exit the Nest or Google Home app if you’re attempting to adjust the temperature and lock the thermostat screen for at least 15-20 minutes.
