Wondering why is the nbn online light flashing? Well, a flashing light could mean anything!
A flashing nbn online light designates a fault with the service connection/line, as the LED indicator must always remain in solid green.
This guide will help you determine what causes the alternation of the online lights’ blinking patterns and provide solutions to restore the connection.
If the “ONLINE” light of the nbn connection box flashes persistently, check whether an outage impacts your address and power cycles the box. Next, inspect the wiring of your device and configure the modem’s nbn settings.

Why is the nbn Box Online Light Flashing?
Let’s find out what causes the uncontrolled blinking of the nbn’s “ONLINE” light:
nbn Connectivity Lights & Patterns
Alterations in the illumination of the lights may designate a fault or particular status of the nbn connection box, making it easier for the user to recognise the error and undertake measures.

nbn Online Light Flashing – Easy Fix Guide
Tip: Follow the solutions in their consecutive order!
1. Check for nbn Outages
While addressing an outage in a specific area, nbn technicians disable all internet services to ensure a secure and effective resolution to the issue.
The nbn staff notifies all locally affected users through the online nbn outage identifier, accessible through your PC or mobile phone.
- Go to the official nbn Outage Identifier section!
If an outage in your area has been reported, wait at least several hours until the nbn technicians reestablish your local service connection.
The longevity of an outage is solely based on the depth of the malfunction, the target area of the outage and, typically, the weather conditions.

2. Set Your IP to “Dynamic”
One of the primary causes for the lasting blinking status of the “ONLINE” light is improperly adjusted GUI settings of the connected network modem.
All nbn connection boxes require an external connection to a compatible gateway to create a local network and host Wi-Fi.
- Acquire the modem’s default gateway, typically found on a sticker on the rear panel.
This is how a typical re-adjustment of the modem’s network settings is achieved:
- Type down the default network gateway in your browser.
- Use “admin” twice to sign in to the modem’s GUI settings.
- Once signed in, go to the “Network” → “Advanced” tab.
- Next, select the “DSL” option on the sidebar of the menu.
- Click “Delete All” and select “Add” to create a new DSL.
- Select the “Internet Connection Type” button on the tab.
- Set the IP preference to “Dynamic” and create your DSL.
- Save the changes done to the modem’s settings and exit.
Setting the modem’s connectivity to “Dynamic” allows for automatic adjustment of the external service provider.
So, the modem will acquire all essential network details of the nbn connection box without any further manual adjustments required by the user.
Tip: Test the modem’s connectivity after adjusting the modem’s IP selection!
3. Power Cycle Your nbn Box
The flashing online light might indicate a temporarily impaired service caused due to power issues with the nbn connection box.
A proven method to restore the online light to its regular state is conducting a power cycle that discharges the nbn connection box and loads it up again.
Follow these steps to effectively power circulate the nbn box:
- Turn off the nbn box’s power supply from the wall.
- Unplug the power plug from the back of your nbn.
- Wait for 2 minutes for the nbn system to shut down.
- Reconnect the power cord of the nbn box to power.
- Wait until the nbn connection box starts and loads.
Note: It may take up to 3 minutes until the “ONLINE” lamp acquires status.
4. Inspect the nbn Box’s Wiring
The nbn modem online light flashing might result from an improper modem or nbn wiring installation.
Any loose, disconnected or damaged wires may directly impact the signal service of your nbn box, restricting your access.
So, the next step is to recognise the type of nbn box you’re packing and thoroughly inspect the cables, connectors and respective ports.
Here are each of the individual nbn installations and which cables are included!
FTTP & FTTB nbn Connection Box
Fibre to the Premises and Fibre to the Building is connected the following way:
- A power adapter connects the nbn to the power supply.
- A fibre cable connects the nbn box to the service outlet.
- An Ethernet cable connecting the nbn to your modem.
FTTN, FTTC & HFC nbn Connection Box
Fibre to the Node, Fibre to the Curb and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial, connect this way:
- The power cable, linking the nbn box with the power supply.
- The fibre cable connects the nbn to the master fibre outlet.
- An Ethernet cable connecting the third-party modem device.
- Optional: An Ethernet cable connecting a mesh unit router.
Fixed Wireless nbn Connection Box
The fixed wireless connection (FW) is implemented in your setup the following way:
- The power adapter cable connects the nbn with a power supply.
- Optional: An Ethernet cable connecting computer devices locally.
Fixed wireless nbn connection boxes do not use a fibre cable and instead connect with nbn’s regional cellular network that uses 3G, 4G or 5G connectivity.
The “ONLINE” light on a fixed wireless nbn will only flicker whenever there’s an issue with the local cellular connectivity.
5. Reset Your Connected Modem
The nbn connection box might fail to recognise the modem due to incorrect network settings or security adjustments.
Thus, to revert any changes applied to the modem, it is recommended to undergo a complete network reset by restoring the device’s system settings to factory values.
Here’s how to reset the network of the connected modem or router:
- Locate the reset pinhole on your modem’s back.
- Insert a pin or a paperclip into the reset pinhole.
- Hold the Reset button for up to about 7 seconds.
- Release the button once the modem’s LED blinks.
- Wait for the modem to finalise the factory reset.
Reminder: You will need to configure the modem’s network settings within the administrator tool after the factory reset process is complete.
6. Factory Reset Your nbn Box
It is possible to perform a factory reset on the nbn, even when the device is offline, and you are seeing flashing lights.
The factory reset will restore the system of the nbn connection box, fixing potential problems and software bugs, causing the “Online” light indicator to flash indefinitely.
Follow these instructions to perform a factory reset on the nbn connection box:
- Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the nbn box.
- Insert a pin or a paperclip into the pinhole and press.
- Hold the button for ~15 seconds without releasing it.
- Wait until your nbn connection box resets and restarts.
Without visual indicators, the nbn may remain idle for up to 5 minutes after starting the factory reset process.
If the nbn box has undergone the procedure successfully, the initial setup should start automatically, causing all of the LED lights to illuminate green one by one.
Note: Your nbn box may require up to 5 minutes to connect with the network after a reset!
